Courtney, Alfred Ransom b. 11/17/1833, King & Queen Co., VA. Enl. 7/8/1861 Capt. Henrico Co. Art. Prm’d. 7/14/1862 Maj. Chief of Art. Ewell’s division. Court martialed for dereliction of duty, (due to his absence at Sharpsburg), he left Lee’s army and was appt’d. AIG 4/20/1863, and assigned to Gen. Buckner’s command. Postwar legislator in VA, and Grand Master Mason in VA. d. 11/4/1914, Richmond.

Cowan, Andrew b. 9/21/1841, Ayrshire, Scotland. Enl. 4/29/1861 at Elmira, NY as 1st Sgt., Battery B, 3rd NY Light Art., 11/23/1861 he was comiss’d. 1st Lt. 1st Battery, NY Light Art. He served with the Sixth Corps at Antietam and later in the war. 1st Lt. 11/15/1861, Capt. 1/23/1863, Brevet Maj. & Lt. Col. MOV on 6/23/1865 at Syracuse, NY. Postwar moved to Louisville KY worked as leather merchant, active in veterans’ affairs, pres. Society of the Army of the Potomac, d. 8/23/1919. Cowan wrote two letters to Carman describing his actions at Antietam.

Cox, Jacob Dolson b. 10/27/1828, Montreal, Canada. G. Oberlin College 1851. Lawyer in OH, active in OH Republican party, abolitionist. BG OH troops 4/23/1861, BG of Vols. 5/17/1861. After success under McClellan in western VA, led Kanawha division and then Ninth Corps in MD Campaign. Appt’d. MG 10/6/1862, but not confirmed until 1864. Commanded division in Atlanta and Tennessee Campaigns. Elected Gov. of OH 1866-1867. Sect. of Interior under Grant. Practiced law again; US Congress, RR president and college administrator. d. 8/4/1900. His memoirs were influential on Carman’s manuscript and they exchanged many letters.

Craig, David Pierce b. 12/23/1836, Belfast. ME. Living in Anoka, MN, enl. 10/5/1861as a Corp. Co. A, 2nd USSS. Injured 6/1/1862 White Plains, VA (railroad collision), Prm’d. Sgt. date not stated, discharged for disability on 9/25/1862. Postwar went back to MN, lived in ME around 1880 and settled in Washington DC before 1900. Worked as a govt. clerk. Craig wrote to Gould in 1893 on stationery of the Asso. of Survivors of First and Second regiments (Berdan’s) US Sharpshooters, Washington DC. Craig was listed as Sect’y. & Treas. d. 12/11/1905, Washington DC.

Crane, Orrin J. b. c.1828, Troy, NY. By 1852 a ship’s carpenter in Cleveland. On 4/19/1861 comiss’d. as 1st Lt. Co. A, 7th OH Inf. 90-day reg’t. Prm’d. Capt. 5/14/1861, Converted to 3 year reg’t. Capt. 6/13/1861, Major 5/25/1862, Lt. Col. 3/2/1863. KIA 11/27/1863 at Ringgold, GA.

Crawford, Samuel Wylie b. 11/8/1827, Fayetteville, PA. G. Univ. of PA 1846, U. of PA Med School, 1850. Enl. US Army 3/10/1851, Ass’t. Surg. Western posts, Surg. Ft. Sumter 1860-61. Prm’d. Maj. 5/14/1861, BG of Vols. 4/25/1862, served in Banks’ command, Brevet Col. 7/2/1863 Regular Army, Lt. Colonel 2/17/1864, Brevet MG 8/1/1864, Brevet BG 3/13/1865 Regular Army, MG Vols. 3/13/1865 by Brevet. His career was controversial; accused of shirking at Antietam, and lagging at Five Forks. Retired 3/3/1875, d. 11/3/1895, Philadelphia. It may be significant that no Crawford letters exist in the files of Gould or the Battlefield Board.

Crenshaw, William Graves b. 7/7/1824 into a prominent Richmond, VA, family. Owned the Crenshaw Woolen Mill in Richmond next to Tredagar Iron Works.
